August 2016
This month saw the Mens teams exit both the Derek Burridge and the Cambridge Friendly league competitions at the Semi-final stages. In the Derek Burridge they were soundly beaten by Nene Park at Orton Meadows and in the CFL they were beaten by Bourn at Bourn. A good season for the mens's teams but which unfortunately didn't result in a final in any of the 3 main County competitions we enter. The Medals were played on the 14th and their were some very good scores. Nathan Whitwell took the honours in the Silver division with a net 58 (and subsequent handicap change) and David Day was second with a net 65, In the Bronze division Henry Willis returned to the winners enclosure with a net 69 beating Martin Seery by one shot. In the Ladies Medal Tina Connell scored a great net 66 with Linda Harness runner up.
July 2016
The month started with the Bainbridge Bogey competition where 10 of the players managed to half or beat the course! Most impressive was the winner Jacqueline Richardson who finished 7 Up against the course. Runner Up with another good score was Roy Brown who was 4 Up at the end.
Alas the Mens' run in the Jock Stewart Competition came to an end at the Semi final stage away at Thorpe Wood. In a very close match two matches had to go to sudden death play offs, one was won at the First extra hole and the deciding match was lost on the 3rd extra home. A great run for the team however.
The Goldfish Bowl proved popular again with the overall winner being Dean Lack who scored 56 points from the fishing and 39 from the golf.
Captains Day was very popular as well with Colin and Linda having a great day and we all had a go at the archery too thanks to support from the Ramsey Ravens. A quiz night this month was also well supported including from the Ramsey Ravens again. The Old Nene played a Mixed match against Lakeside Lodge on the 8th July with ONGC coming out winners 3-2.
The Ladies contested the Jan Owen Trophy on the 10th but unfortunately some entrants played a stableford competition instead of a Medal card and got disqualified for not entering scores on all holes. A lesson learnt. From those who did enter scores correctly the winners were Kath Loukes and Linda Harness with a net 69. Runners up were Sally Anne Barnard-Taylor and Jacquie Richardson with a net 71.
The Seniors Captain Lesley Clarke also enjoyed her Captains Day in fine weather which was well attended too. Brian Parker won first prize for the men with 38 points with Colin Mudd 2nd. Joyce Ward won the Ladies competition with 36 points beating Jacquie Richardson on countback . Unfortunately the Seniors lost their match with March seniors 3.5 to 2.5. The main news from the Seniors section were the heroic actions of Joyce Ward who dived into the water by the lock at the second tee to pull a dog from the water that had fallen in and become disorientated. The rescue got her the thanks of the dogs owner as well as a picture in the Hunts Post and an article. Well done Joyce.
June 2016
The month started with the Fletcher Cup on the 4th which was played on less than ideal conditions on the course. May 2016
This month saw one of the Mens Teams best results in the Jock Stewart. An away victory at Safron Walden which was sealed when Jon Hazleden sank a 12ft putt on the 18th in front of an audience to win their match 1 Up and make the match score 2-1. The match almost didn't take place due to a rule about not wearing shorts in County matches, but the Safron members kindly provided long trousers for those that needed them so the match could go ahead.
The Extra Stableford on the 11th was won Dean Lack with 37 points with Mike Ambrose Runner up. The May medal saw some new names at the top. In the Mens Silver division Ron Dolby saw his handicap reduced further to 17 after returning a score of net 65. In the Daily Mail Foursomes competition unfortunately our pairing of Rob Cooper and Colin Harness lost out to a pairing from Gedney Hill G.C.
February 2016
Every dog has its day so the saying goes and so it proved at the February Stableford competition. Making a return to the winners circle after a prolonged absence was Henry Willis who won by 6 strokes with a excellent 42 points. Even better for Henry he also split the 2's pot and as we aren't playing over the measured course currently...his handicap remained unchanged. Well done Henry
One half of the Mens Winter league draw is complete with Ashley Young and Shaun Cornell beating John Skoulding and Dean Lack in the quarter finals and then beating Ian Clarey and David Day in the Semi finals. Ian and David had made it to their Semi final by beating the till then unbeaten pairing of Mike Ambrose and Jon Hazleden. The other half of the draw is at the quarter final stage with both being played the first weekend of March. The winning pairs will then meet in the Semi finals before going on to face Ashley and Shaun in the final
For all those that didn't hear it....Jon Hazleden got a Hole in One on the 3rd hole on Sunday 7th February and kindly bought all those present a drink . Well done Jon
The start of February has not been a good one for the club in the Daily Mail Team competitions.
The Men and Ladies team both exited on the same day, the Ladies away at St. Ives , the Men as home to March after a sudden death play off.
Also on the same day Ashley and Shaun exited the Cambridge Evening News at the second round.
